The Box Cinema, Derry/Londonderry

This project was a rescue mission, saving the environment while simultaneously saving cinema…

When approaching this project, I was very aware of the pitfalls of temporary architecture. When exploring the provocation “Temporary architecture pretends to empower people through engagement when really it stands between people and meaningful urban decision-making,” I found that even architecture with the best intentions can easily become problematic.

I chose to make my project around the Foyle Film festival in Derry/Londonderry as film is one of my passions and an industry I have worked in since a young age. In creating this project, I wanted to bring cinema to more people by focusing in on the experience, or ritual, of movie watching. Sustainability was a key part of this project. One of the massive issues of temporary architecture is waste. Trying to make the cinema out of a much waste as possible and having it leave as small a footprint on the site as possible was of paramount importance
